SEO questions Malaysian business owners actually ask

The basics

Getting started

What does an SEO agency in Kuala Lumpur actually do all month?

In a healthy engagement: research and produce content, fix technical issues, build authority through outreach and editorial placement, maintain local and structured data signals, and report against enquiries. If you cannot see which specific pages changed in a given month, the retainer is probably being spent on reporting rather than work.

Can I do SEO myself?

The technical and on-page foundation, largely yes, and the free scan will show you where to start. Authority building is where most owners stall, because it needs sustained outreach rather than a weekend. A common split is doing the on-page work internally and buying the authority work.

How do I know if my current agency is doing anything?

Ask for three things: the list of pages changed last month with what changed on each, the specific authority placements earned, and a report that ends in enquiries rather than impressions. Vagueness on all three is the answer.

Is SEO still worth it now that AI answers questions directly?

The foundation matters more, not less. Assistants retrieve from indexed sources, so a site that ranks well is a site they can find. What changed is that traffic and visibility have partly separated. You can be cited without being clicked, which means measurement has to widen beyond sessions.

Money and time

Cost, timelines and contracts

Why is SEO in Malaysia priced so differently between agencies?

Because the label covers wildly different work. At RM800 a month you are usually buying automated reporting and generic articles. At RM8,000 you are buying senior strategy, real content production and outreach. Both are called SEO. Only one displaces a KL competitor. Full bands on the pricing page.

When should I expect to see results?

Technical improvements register in months one to three. Ranking movement typically appears in months three to six. Compounding traffic and lead growth usually lands between months six and twelve. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is describing a keyword nobody searches.

What is a realistic first-year budget for a KL SME?

At the RM2,500 to RM5,000 monthly band, plan for RM30,000 to RM60,000 across twelve months, weighted slightly heavier in the first quarter where the technical foundation is built. Judge it against the value of your average client rather than against the fee in isolation.

What happens if I stop?

Rankings decay rather than collapse. Technical fixes and published content keep working. What stops is the compounding, so competitors who continue will pass you over the following six to twelve months. The decay is slower for sites with strong earned authority, which is one more argument for building it.

AI search

AI, ChatGPT and generative search

How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?

Three things in order. Define your business as a machine-readable entity with Organization schema and consistent details. Publish content that answers real questions in extractable form. Then earn third-party mentions on sources these systems retrieve from, since self-description carries very little weight. The AI SEO page covers the mechanics.

Does posting on TikTok or Instagram help AI visibility?

Not directly, since those platforms are largely not crawled for this purpose. The indirect effect is real though. Social reach drives branded search volume and media interest, and those produce the citable web content that does influence what assistants say.

Will AI search kill website traffic?

It is already reducing clicks on informational queries where the answer is given in the result. Commercial and transactional queries are more resilient, because people still want to compare, verify and buy. The rational response is to shift content investment toward decision-stage pages and toward being the cited source on the informational ones.

How do I check whether AI mentions my company?

Ask four assistants the same category question your buyer would ask, three times each, and record who gets named and which sources appear. Repeat monthly. That is the honest version of AI visibility tracking, and it takes about twenty minutes.

Risk

Penalties, reputation and things that go wrong

Can SEO damage my website?

Yes, and it happens more than agencies admit. Bought links, private blog networks, spun content and aggressive redirect schemes can all trigger penalties or algorithmic suppression. Recovery takes longer than the original build. Ask any prospective agency exactly how they acquire links before you sign.

Something negative ranks for my company name. What now?

First establish whether it can be removed at all, which most cannot. Then build and strengthen enough legitimate assets to displace it, and separately address what AI assistants say, since that is a different surface with a different fix. Details on the reputation management page.

Our traffic dropped suddenly. What are the usual causes?

In order of frequency: a site change or deployment that broke something, a core algorithm update, a manual action, a tracking or analytics fault that makes the drop look worse than it is, or seasonality. Check the deployment history before assuming Google did it. Most sudden drops are self-inflicted.
