How much does SEO cost in Kuala Lumpur?
The honest range, what each band actually buys, and the price below which you are paying for the appearance of work.
Short answer
SEO in Kuala Lumpur costs roughly RM800 to RM15,000 per month. Most KL SMEs land between RM1,500 and RM5,000. Below about RM800 a month the budget cannot cover a person doing real work, so it usually buys automated content and bulk links instead. The number matters far less than what is written into the scope. See what Robin charges and what sits inside each band.
Why the range is so wide
Two KL businesses can get quoted RM1,200 and RM9,000 for what looks like the same thing. The quotes are not really for the same thing. Four variables move the number more than anything else.
Competition in your category. Ranking a niche B2B manufacturer in Shah Alam and ranking a property developer in Mont Kiara are different jobs. One has eleven competitors. The other has three hundred, and several of them have been publishing since 2015.
The state of your site. A site with clean architecture and existing rankings needs tuning. A site built on a page builder with 400 duplicate URLs needs remedial work for three months before growth starts. That remedial work is the expensive part, and it is invisible in month one. Our technical SEO page covers what that work involves.
How many locations. One office in Bangsar is one Google Business Profile and one set of local signals. Six branches across the Klang Valley is six of everything. See local SEO for how that scales.
Whether AI visibility is in scope. Being cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews is related to ranking but not the same work. It leans on off-domain evidence rather than on-page tuning, and most Malaysian quotes do not include it. That is the bulk of what AI SEO adds.

What each budget realistically buys in KL
Ranges reflect what Malaysian providers charge. What you get is the part worth arguing about.
| Monthly | Who it suits | What it realistically covers |
|---|---|---|
| Under RM800 | Nobody, honestly | Cannot fund a skilled person for meaningful hours. Usually automated content and bulk links. The repair bill later often exceeds the saving. |
| RM800 to RM1,500 | Single-location micro business | Google Business Profile work, basic on-page fixes, light reporting. Little content production and almost no authority building. |
| RM1,500 to RM2,500 | Small local business, low competition | Local SEO plus modest monthly content. Enough to win suburb-level terms. Not enough for competitive KL head terms. |
| RM2,500 to RM5,000 | Most established KL SMEs | Technical remediation, a real content cadence, local signals, and the start of genuine authority work. |
| RM5,000 to RM10,000 | Mid-market, multi-location, or a competitive category | Everything above at higher volume, plus off-domain citation building and AI visibility work. |
| RM10,000 and up | Enterprise, listed companies, national campaigns | Multi-market scope, reputation defence, stakeholder reporting, and coordination with existing agencies and internal teams. |
Robin's own bands sit in the top three rows. The reasoning is on the pricing page.

What a real scope has in writing
Price tells you almost nothing. Scope tells you everything. A quote should name all of these.
- The specific deliverables each month, counted. Not content creation but four pages, this long, on these topics.
- Who does the work. A named person, or a team, or an offshore subcontractor.
- What happens to the assets if you leave. Pages, profiles and accounts should be yours.
- How links are acquired. If the answer is vague, assume they are bought.
- What is reported, and whether it is tied to enquiries or only to impressions.
- The minimum term, and what you can cancel.
Questions
SEO cost questions
Is cheap SEO in Malaysia ever worth it?
Rarely, and the failure is expensive in a way that does not show up for months. A low retainer cannot fund skilled hours, so the work shifts to what can be automated. Automated content and bulk links move very little, and some of it has to be cleaned up later. The real cost is the six to nine months you cannot get back.
Should I pay monthly or as a one-off project?
Monthly suits ongoing growth, because SEO compounds and stopping resets momentum. A one-off project suits a defined job with an end: an audit, a site migration, a cleanup. If your goal is a steady flow of enquiries, a retainer is the honest structure.
Do freelancers cost less than agencies in KL?
Usually, because the overhead is lower. The tradeoff is capacity and continuity. A solo consultant with fifteen years of experience and a small caseload can outperform a large team on strategy, but cannot match an agency on raw production volume. Ask directly how many clients the person carries.
Why does Robin publish prices when most Malaysian agencies do not?
Because hidden pricing wastes both sides' time and selects for buyers who negotiate rather than buyers who fit. The bands are on the pricing page so you can rule this out in thirty seconds if the budget is wrong.
