Guide

Why is my website not ranking on Google?

There are only so many reasons, and they have a natural order. Checking them out of order is why people spend months fixing the wrong thing.

Short answer

Check in this order: is the page indexed, does it match the intent of the query, is the content actually competitive, does the site have enough authority, and has enough time passed. Most Malaysian sites that are not ranking fail at step one or step two, which are the two cheapest to fix.

Diagnosis

Work through it in this order

1. Is the page indexed at all?

Search for a distinctive sentence from the page in quotes. Nothing back means Google does not have it. Check Search Console coverage, your robots.txt, any stray noindex tag, and whether a canonical is pointing somewhere else. A surprising number of Malaysian sites carry a noindex left over from staging.

2. Does the page match the intent?

Search your target keyword and look at what actually ranks. If the first page is all comparison articles and yours is a service page, you are the wrong format for that query. No amount of optimisation fixes a format mismatch. Change the page or change the target.

3. Is the content genuinely competitive?

Open the top three results and read them properly. If they answer twelve sub-questions and yours answers three, that is the gap. Length is not the point. Coverage and specificity are.

4. Is the technical foundation sound?

Slow load on mobile, broken internal links, duplicate pages competing with each other, no clean heading structure. These rarely cause total invisibility on their own but they cap how high anything can go.

5. Does the site have enough authority?

If everything above is right and you are still on page three, this is usually it. Competitive KL categories need genuine off-domain credibility. This is the slowest and most expensive part, which is why it should be checked last, not first.

6. Has enough time passed?

New pages and new domains need months. If the page went live six weeks ago, the honest answer may be that nothing is wrong yet.

One thing to resist

When rankings move oddly after a round of optimisation, the instinct is to undo everything. Resist it for at least three months.

Search results are noisy after changes for entirely ordinary reasons. Pages get re-crawled at different times, competitors move, and Google re-evaluates. Reversing good work in week three because of noise is one of the more common ways Malaysian businesses waste a year, because it destroys the only thing that was going to compound.

Change deliberately, record what you changed and when, then wait. If you cannot say what changed on which date, that is the first problem to fix.

Questions

Ranking questions

Could I have been penalised?

Manual actions are rare and they appear in Search Console, so check there first. Far more often what feels like a penalty is an algorithm update that re-weighted something, or bulk links from a previous provider losing whatever value they briefly had.

My developer says the site is fine. Is it?

Possibly, for their definition. Developers check that pages load and work. That is different from checking whether a crawler can reach every page, whether duplicates compete, or whether the structure is extractable. Both things can be true at once.

How do I find out quickly rather than guessing?

Run the free scan. It reads five of your pages plus robots.txt and your sitemap, and scores crawl health, page foundations, AI answer readiness, structured data and trust signals. It will not catch everything, but it tells you which of the six steps above to start on.

Find out where you actually stand

The scan reads five of your pages and scores them the way a crawler and an AI model would. Around ten seconds. Then Robin will tell you, free, which fix matters first.
