Can it be found at all
Robots directives, sitemaps, canonical logic, parameter handling, redirect chains, orphan pages and crawl budget waste. A surprising number of Malaysian sites carry a stray noindex from a staging build that nobody removed.
Can it be read once found
Client-side rendering that hides content from crawlers, lazy loading that never triggers, and content injected after the parse. Google often recovers. Several AI crawlers do not, and record an empty page.
Can it be understood
Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Article markup, validated and interlinked with stable identifiers. This is the layer that turns text into facts a machine can act on.
Is it fast enough on a Malaysian phone
Core Web Vitals measured on mid-range Android over a typical KL mobile connection, not on a laptop on office fibre. Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, layout shift, and the image weight behind them.
Does authority reach the pages that earn
Click depth, internal link distribution and anchor patterns. On most sites authority pools on the homepage and never reaches the service pages that actually generate revenue.
Does it handle three languages cleanly
Hreflang for English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese variants, plus the return-tag errors that silently cancel the whole implementation. Common in KL. Rarely caught.
The five checks worth running before you hire anyone
You can do these yourself in twenty minutes, and they will tell you whether your current provider is doing the foundational work.
One. Search Google for site:yourdomain.com.my and count the results. If the number is wildly higher or lower than your real page count, you have an indexation problem.
Two. Open your homepage, view source, and search for the phrase application/ld+json. If it is absent, you have no structured data and no entity definition.
Three. Visit yourdomain.com.my/robots.txt. Check whether GPTBot and ClaudeBot are blocked. Somebody may have decided your AI visibility for you.
Four. Disable JavaScript in your browser and reload a service page. Whatever disappears is content some crawlers never see.
Five. Count how many clicks it takes to reach your most profitable service page from the homepage. More than three is a structural problem, not a content one.

How often should a KL business run a technical audit?
A full audit once a year, and a lighter check after any significant site change: a redesign, a platform migration, a new plugin set, a CDN change. Most technical damage is introduced by a deployment rather than by decay.
Our site is on WordPress. Is that a problem?
Not inherently. WordPress can be made fast and clean. The usual problem is accumulation: fifteen plugins, three of which duplicate schema output, two of which inject render-blocking scripts. The fix is subtraction rather than migration in most cases.
Do Core Web Vitals really affect rankings in Malaysia?
They are a genuine but modest ranking factor. Their larger effect is on conversion. Malaysian mobile traffic on mid-range devices abandons slow pages, so the improvement usually shows in enquiries before it shows in position.
Can you work with our existing web developer?
