SEO or Google Ads: which is better for a Malaysian business?
They answer different questions. One buys attention now. The other builds something you own. Most KL businesses need both, weighted differently at different stages.
Short answer
Google Ads when you need enquiries this month, are testing a new offer, or work in a category with sharp seasonality. SEO when you want cost per lead to fall over time and can fund six to twelve months first. Running both is usually correct, because strong organic content lifts Quality Score, which lowers what you pay per click. See Google Ads management.
Side by side
The honest comparison
| Google Ads | SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| First enquiries | Days | Three to six months |
| Cost behaviour | Flat or rising. Competitors bid the price up. | Falls per lead over time as pages mature. |
| When you stop paying | Traffic stops that day. | Traffic decays slowly over months. |
| What you own afterwards | Data and creative learnings. | Pages, rankings, authority and citations. |
| Trust from the click | Lower. People know it is an ad. | Higher. Organic and AI citations read as endorsement. |
| Best for | Launches, promotions, seasonal peaks, testing demand. | Categories where people research before buying. |
| AI search visibility | None. Assistants do not read your ads. | Direct. The same content feeds AI answers. |
Why running both costs less than running one
This is the part most comparisons skip. Google scores every ad on Quality Score, and landing page experience is one of the inputs. The technical work that helps a page rank organically, clean structure, fast load, content that matches the query, also raises that score. A higher Quality Score lowers your cost per click for the same position.
So the SEO work you are paying for anyway makes your ad budget go further. That is why Robin bundles the two rather than selling them separately. The mechanics are on the Google Ads page.
There is a second effect worth knowing. Ads give you keyword conversion data in weeks that organic would take a year to produce. Use paid search to find out which terms actually generate enquiries rather than just traffic, then point the content plan at those. It turns an expensive guess into a cheap experiment.
Decide
Weight the budget toward ads if
- You need enquiries inside the next eight weeks.
- You are launching something and do not yet know if anyone wants it.
- Your category has sharp seasonal peaks, like festive retail or year-end travel.
- Your margins per sale are high enough to absorb Malaysian CPCs comfortably.
- You cannot fund six to twelve months of work before the return arrives.
Decide
Weight the budget toward SEO if
- Customers research for weeks before they buy, which covers most professional services, property and healthcare.
- Your cost per click has been climbing and the maths is getting tight.
- You want to be the business ChatGPT and Gemini name, which ads cannot buy.
- You have a site with existing content that is underperforming rather than nothing at all.
- You are building something to sell eventually, since organic visibility is an asset on the balance sheet and an ad account is not.
Questions
SEO and ads questions
Does running Google Ads help my organic rankings?
Not directly. Google has been clear that ad spend is not a ranking factor. The benefit runs the other way and sideways: SEO work lowers ad costs through Quality Score, and ad data tells you which keywords convert so the content plan targets the right ones.
What split should a KL SME start with?
A common starting shape is heavier on ads in the first quarter while organic has no traction, then shifting weight toward organic from month six as it starts producing. The exact split depends on margin and urgency, which is what the consultation call is for.
Can I do ads only and skip SEO entirely?
You can, and some businesses should. The risk is that you are renting your entire pipeline. If a competitor outbids you or your category's CPCs rise, volume drops the same week. You also stay invisible to AI assistants, which do not read ads.
