Guide
How to appear in Google AI Overviews
The AI answer now sits above everything else on a growing share of searches. Being position one underneath it is worth less than being the source inside it.
Short answer
AI Overviews mostly pull from pages that already rank for the query, then favour the ones that answer the question directly in the first two sentences, use clear heading and list structure, carry specific checkable facts, and are corroborated elsewhere. So classic SEO is the entry ticket, and answer-shaped content is what gets you selected once you are in the room.
What changed, and what it costs you
For a long time the deal was simple. Rank at the top, get the click. AI Overviews change the deal. Google now synthesises an answer at the top of the page, cites a handful of sources, and many people never scroll past it.
If your page is one of the cited sources, you get a smaller number of clicks but they arrive pre-qualified, and your brand name is attached to the answer either way. If your page is not cited, you can hold position one and watch clicks fall anyway. That is the shift worth planning around.
Queries phrased as questions trigger these boxes most often, which is precisely why this site publishes question-shaped guides rather than only service pages.
Method
How to become the cited source
Earn the entry ticket first
Overviews draw heavily on pages already ranking in the top results for that query. If you are on page four, structure will not save you. The technical and content fundamentals still come first.
Answer in the first two sentences
Put the direct answer immediately under the heading, then expand. A summary block at the top of every page is the single highest leverage formatting change most sites can make.
Write in extractable units
Short paragraphs. Real headings that match how the question is phrased. Tables for comparisons. Lists for sequences. An answer that cannot be lifted cleanly will not be lifted at all.
Be specific enough to be worth quoting
Numbers, ringgit ranges, timeframes, named locations, stated conditions. Vague claims are unquotable. This is where most Malaysian service pages lose.
Get corroborated off your own domain
Independent sources that agree with you raise the confidence of any claim. This is the same authority work that drives assistant citations generally.
Keep it current
AI systems carry a strong recency bias. A guide refreshed this quarter beats an identical one last updated two years ago. Refresh your winners on a schedule rather than only publishing new pages.
Audit
Run this on your best page right now
Six checks. If you fail three or more, that page will not be cited regardless of where it ranks.
- Is the question answered inside the first fifty words, or is it buried under a company introduction?
- Do the headings match the words a customer would actually type?
- Is there at least one table or list a machine could lift whole?
- Are there specific numbers, prices, timeframes or place names on the page?
- Would any of your competitors be able to publish the same paragraphs unchanged?
- When was it last meaningfully updated, and does the page say so?
Questions
AI Overview questions
Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?
You can, and some publishers do. For a Malaysian service business it is usually the wrong trade. Blocking removes you from the answers your buyers now read first, and you were never getting paid for the impression anyway. Publishers selling subscriptions face a genuinely different calculation.
Do AI Overviews appear for Malaysian searches?
Yes, and coverage has been expanding. They show up most on informational and question-shaped queries, and less on sharply transactional ones, though that boundary keeps moving.
Is this different from optimising for ChatGPT?
Partly. AI Overviews lean on Google's own ranking signals, so classic SEO transfers well. ChatGPT and Perplexity lean harder on off-domain consensus, so a page can win one and lose the other. The ChatGPT guide covers that side.
How do I know if it is working?
Track it manually and on a schedule. Run your target questions monthly, record who is named and cited, and watch Search Console for the pattern of impressions rising while clicks stay flat, which is usually the fingerprint of an Overview sitting above you.
