How to remove negative Google search results in Malaysia
Someone searches your company name and finds a complaint thread, a bad review, or an old news story. Here is what can actually be done, in the order worth trying.
Short answer
Most negative results cannot be deleted. Google removes content in narrow cases: doxxing, non-consensual imagery, certain financial and identity data, and material subject to a valid legal order. Everything else is a suppression problem, meaning you push it down by publishing stronger assets. Chasing removal when suppression is the answer wastes the first three months. See ORM in KL.
Reality check
What can and cannot be removed
| Type of result | Removable? | What actually works |
|---|---|---|
| Personal data: identity numbers, bank details, home address, contact details | Often yes | Google's removal request process covers several categories of personal information appearing in results. |
| Non-consensual or explicit imagery | Yes | A dedicated removal process exists and is generally responsive. |
| Genuinely defamatory content | Sometimes | Requires a legal route in Malaysia. Google will act on a valid court order. Get proper legal advice before spending on this path. |
| A negative but honest customer review | No | Reply publicly and well. A measured reply from the owner often does more for the next reader than removal would. |
| A review that breaks platform policy | Sometimes | Flag it with the specific policy cited. Fake reviews, competitor reviews and off-topic rants are the winnable cases. |
| Old news coverage or a court record | Almost never | Suppression. Publish and strengthen assets until they outrank it. |
| A complaint thread on a forum or social platform | Rarely | Engage where appropriate, then suppress. Legal threats usually amplify it. |
| Outdated page that no longer exists | Yes | Google's outdated content tool refreshes results where the live page has already changed or gone. |
How suppression actually works
Page one has roughly ten organic positions plus a map pack, images and often an AI answer. Suppression means occupying enough of those positions with assets you control or influence that the negative result drops to page two, where almost nobody looks.
The assets that rank reliably for a brand name are your own site and its deeper pages, your Google Business Profile, your LinkedIn and other social profiles, video, credible directory and industry body listings, press coverage and interviews, and author profiles for named people in the business.
It is unglamorous and it takes months. Anyone offering a two-week guarantee is either doing something that will not last or something you would not want associated with your name.
The part most people miss now
Suppressing page one is no longer the whole job. When someone asks an assistant whether your company is any good, it does not read page one in order. It synthesises an answer from sources it can find and corroborate, and a single well-indexed complaint thread can carry disproportionate weight if nothing credible contradicts it.
So the modern version of this work has two halves. Push the negative result down in the classic ranking sense, and build enough independent positive evidence that an assistant summarising your brand has better material to work with. The second half is the one most Malaysian reputation providers are not yet doing.
That is the reasoning behind combining ORM and AI SEO rather than selling them as separate problems.
First moves
What to do this week
- Search your brand name in a private window and record the top twenty results. You cannot manage what you have not written down.
- Do the same in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Note what they say and which sources they cite.
- Check whether anything qualifies for genuine removal before assuming it does not.
- Reply to every negative review you have not replied to, calmly and specifically.
- Claim and complete every profile that carries your name.
- Then start publishing. Depth on your own domain is the most reliable suppression asset you control.
Questions
Reputation questions
Can I sue to get something taken down in Malaysia?
Sometimes, and this is a question for a Malaysian lawyer rather than an SEO consultant. Be aware that litigation frequently draws far more attention to the original content than it removes. Weigh that before starting.
How long does suppression take?
Typically three to nine months depending on how strongly the negative result ranks and how much credible material already exists about you. A well-established news domain takes longer than a forum post.
Should I ask happy customers to leave reviews to bury a bad one?
Ask genuinely, steadily, and never in a burst. Twenty reviews arriving in one week is a pattern, and platforms detect patterns. Never buy reviews. The penalty lands on your profile, not on the vendor's.
Does this work for a person's name as well as a company?
Yes, and it is often harder because there are fewer legitimate assets to build. Author pages, speaking profiles, interviews, professional directories and video all help. The method is the same.
